Great Lengths - A Journey Sourcing Washington State Wines

August 28, 2024

During our recent trip to Eastern Washington, the phrase "windshield time" was heard regularly. In any direction from the "Tri-Cities", comprised of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland, you'll drive past thousands of acres of agricultural land. Vast plots of fruit, hops, wheat, potatoes, onions and alfalfa extend to the horizon in every direction. Where there are no crops, there is either sand, or a stunning river feature winding its way Westward.

Several millennia back, a large glacial lake was dammed by a glacier between what is now the Idaho / Washington State border. As the dam eroded at the end of the last ice age, huge floods deposited silt that is now a defining characteristic of Eastern Washington's topsoil. It is poor in nutrients and drains well, stressing the vines to create an ideal balance of ripeness and acidity. Combined with plenty of warm days and cool nights during the growing season, the special nature of Washington's past has resulted in a perfect grape growing region.

The Eastern half of Washington boasts several notable appellations including Horse Heaven Hills, Ancient Lakes, Wahluke Slope, Red Mountain, Yakima Valley and Walla Walla. Visiting our partners in these regions reminds us of their heartiness, a resounding characteristic of Washington State wines. Enduring a range of 15-105F weather throughout the course of the year tests the resilience of both people and grapevines alike. Just like the wines, they are vibrant, bold, and welcoming.

This is truly a frontier land that inspires a fondness for Americana and the generations of people who've been stewards of the land long before it ever was planted to wine grapes. At NexTerra, we value the diversity of Washington's offerings. Washington continues to prove itself as a region that, year after year, produces quality across the spectrum of wine styles. Crisp aromatic whites, fresh juicy Rosé, and rich, balanced reds are in abundance. The consistency in weather, lack of pest and disease pressure, and access to fresh water culminate into a superb component of our global partnerships.
